The reserve rule: pay yourself before the month starts
A small automatic transfer on pension day is the difference between saving what is left and saving on purpose.

Why the order matters
Saving what remains at the end of the month asks the reserve to compete with every other decision. Moving it first removes the competition. The amount can be small; the order is what makes it reliable.
For a household on retired pay, pension day is the natural moment. The income has just arrived, the fixed bills are known, and the reserve can move before discretionary spending begins.
Choosing the amount
Start with a percentage rather than a dollar figure. Ten percent of retired pay is easy to understand and easy to change. If the month is tight, five percent still establishes the habit.
The reserve should live in a separate savings account, not in the checking balance. Separation is what makes it visible and what makes it harder to spend by accident.
When to pause it
A reserve is a tool, not a rule imposed on the household. Pause it for a known expense, a move or a medical month, then restart it. The account should make pausing and restarting a single action, not a phone call.
“A reserve is not what remains. It is what moves first.”
