The first days
A short sequence for the person who has to act.
- 1Locate the will and the funeral or burial instructions.
- 2Call the bank's named contact and ask for the survivor service process.
- 3Contact DFAS about retired pay and the Survivor Benefit Plan.
- 4Apply for Social Security survivor benefits if eligible.
- 5Notify life insurance companies and request the claim forms.
- 6Do not move or distribute money until the estate documents are reviewed.
- 7Keep a written log of every call, date and reference number.
